FRANCE

officially the French Republic  is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and that also comprises various overseas islands and territores located in other continents. France is a secular country as freedom of religion is a constitutional right, although some religious organisations such as Scientology, Children of God, the Unification Church, and the Order of the Solar Temple are considered cults.

The name France comes from Latin Francia, which literally means land of the Franks or Frankland. There are various theories as to the origin of the name of the Franks. One is that it is derived from the Protogermanic word frankon which translates as javelin or lance as the throwing axe of the Franks was known as a francisca. The railway network of France, which stretches 31,840 kilometres (19,784 mi) is the most extensive in Western Europe. It is operated by the SNCF, and high-speed trains include the Thalys, the Eurostar and TGV, which travels at 320 km/h (200 mph) in commercial use. From studying this country and my penpal i hope to learn the overall way of living of french people and how they differ and are alike american way of life.
